If there is free flow, there is no pain; if there is pain, there is lack of free flow.”

Why Acupuncture?

Acupuncture works to reduce both physical and emotional obstructions in the body. The aim is to relieve tension in the presenting problem whilst also addressing the root of the issue. We do this by looking at both the physiological and psychological environment of each patient, treating each individual as a unique entity of mind and body. By treating the whole person, not just the symptom, acupuncture can support long term recovery and help prevent further imbalance.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment and one of the five pillars of Chinese Medicine, alongside Chinese Herbs, Tui Na, Moxibustion and Qigong. The practice involves inserting ultra fine, single use, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. The precise and careful placement of the needles creates micro trauma, which then promotes blood flow. This chain reaction triggers the body’s natural healing response.

When the body is put into a greater state of balance, it can repair and work to its optimum function. Whether seeking relief for acute or chronic pain, fertility, menstrual or pregnancy support, mental health care or gastro-intestinal discomfort, the effects and benefits are myriad and personal to each individual.

Scientific research has highlighted acupuncture's ability to stimulate the nervous system and cause biochemical changes, such as the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals. This evidence supports acupunctures role in restoring homeostasis, managing pain, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being, making it a valuable tool within both conventional and integrative healthcare settings.

What to expect from a session

After an initial chat and consultation, I will plan a bespoke treatment for you. You will be supported into a comfortable resting position and I will then insert the needles into the acupuncture points that will best assist you. I will then leave you to rest (20-30minutes) and reap the maximum benefits from the treatment. Depending on our focus I combine acupuncture with the following complimentary techniques:

  • Electro acupuncture

  • Gua sha

  • Fire cupping

  • Moxibustion

  • Infrared Heat Lamp

After I have gently removed the needles, I will give you some dietary and wellness suggestions that will help you continue your health journey and maximise the benefits of your treatment.

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping works to stimulate the flow of blood and Qi (vital energy) to the treated area, enhancing circulation, relieving tension, and promoting muscle recovery. It is also used to help expel external pathogens from the body, making it effective for treating colds, flu, and similar ailments.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion (moxa) is a traditional Chinese therapy that uses the dried herb Mugwort, valued for its healing properties. Commonly shaped into sticks, the moxa is heated and held over specific acupuncture points on the body. The warmth created by moxa stimulates the flow of blood and Qi (vital energy), relieving stagnation and helping to stimulate the body’s natural healing capabilities.

Gu Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese therapy primarily used to relieve tension, stiffness, and pain in areas such as the neck, back, and shoulders. A small, smooth tool made of ceramic, jade, or stone is used to apply pressure and scrape the skin in a single direction. This technique helps to stimulate the flow of blood and Qi (vital energy), reduce stagnation, and promote healing. Gua Sha is also used to release toxins, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune response by encouraging circulation.

Electro Acupuncture

Electro acupuncture involves attaching a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine to acupuncture needles, which are inserted at specific points on the body. The electrical impulses generated by the machine provide enhanced stimulation compared to traditional acupuncture, promoting the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood. This increased stimulation helps relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, and encourage movement in targeted areas. Electro acupuncture is particularly effective for treating chronic pain conditions including lower back pain, osteoarthritis, neck and shoulder pain as well as acute pain conditions including plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow as well as other musculoskeletal issues by enhancing the body’s natural healing response.
